What is Facial Gua Sha?

Facial Gua Sha tools have saturated our social media feeds. These beautiful and shapely pieces of stone have grown in popularity because you can get serious results!! And what was once only seen in a lovely jade stone can now be found in a variety of exotic stones.  Shiny little treasures that whisper quietly to my pocketbook — “buy me!”

Maybe you have heard these whispers too?! And maybe you have picked up a tool or two? Or maybe your are still unsure?

No matter where you fall on the spectrum, this short and sweet article will help.

Why rub my face with a stone every night?

It reduces the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing the facial muscles.

Tension in the facial muscles is one of the causes of wrinkles.  Think Botox.  The mechanism of Botox is to paralyses the muscle, putting it in a state of relaxation or “sleep.”  This relaxed state, relieves tension and softens the w6rinkles that surround the muscle.  It is a quick fix, but Botox is the botulism toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.  It is the reason why you never want eat food from a bloated can.  Botulism is a neurotoxin — meaning it is toxic to the nervous system.  Ingestion of botulism is life threatening.  Botox is claimed to be safe, I can’t argue with the science, but I don’t have to trust it either.  Anything that is in the body must be processed by the body. Botox wears off, and that means the neurotoxin has to get processed in the body.  Not to mention is expensive and can leave you looking a little expressionless and less like the shiny bright person you are. I don’t know about you, but I would rather save a ton of money and do a little self-care on the daily.

Exponentially increases circulation in the face and aids in lymphatic flow.

Bumping up the circulation in the face everyday starts to move waste products out of the skin leaving you with less puffiness and more radiance!  Moving waste out of our skin also helps to clean out black heads and reduce breakouts. Your skin is relatively translucent, and as you clear out the muck, out shines the light!

Stimulates the dermis to support collagen and elastin production improving the elasticity of the skin.  The key concept here is micro-trauma. Facial Gua Sha causes small traumas to the skin which signals the body to come in, pay attention to the area and do some work.  Nutrient rich blood is funneled to the area and healing begins.  Elastin and collagen show up to the scene and starts to rebuild the area, laying down a thicker matrix.  What that means for you is firmer skin and a reduction in fine lines.

What kind of a tool should I use?

Be aware of plastic, or dyed acrylic which have the potential to lead to skin irritation.  There are lots of choices out there and it really comes down to a matter of preference.  Basically, the most important thing is finding a tool that is comfortable for you to hold in you hand!

Should I use skin care products with the tool?

You’ll need something that will help lubricate the skin.  The product you use is up to you!  I like to keep it simple, but whatever lotions or oils you like will get the job done.

How should I really be doing this at home?

Daily and always start at the neck. Tension in the neck can inhibit the flow of lymph and blood to and from the face.  It is the highway to the face!  Check out the instructions below!
